Conversations about the future of mental health with young people is essential for raising awareness, breaking stigma, and promoting well-being. By fostering open discussions, encouraging support systems, ensuring access to resources, we create a more understanding and compassionate society where mental health is prioritised.

I believe that pursuing a career in a psychological profession is a meaningful way to make a difference in people’s lives while contributing to a healthier, more compassionate society. With the diverse career paths the field provides it can allow professionals to flourish in order to provide vital support and care to those in need. There was so much passion among young people at the school to the ideals of helping others, promoting mental well-being, and driving positive change, a career in mental health could be a fulfilling and impactful choice for many of them.

Yesterday we observed World Health Day which is a global observance dedicated to drawing attention to critical health issues that impact communities worldwide.

Each year, the day focuses around a specific theme, highlighting urgent challenges and mobilising collective efforts to address them through policy, education, and global cooperation.

Beyond its thematic focus, World Health Day serves as a reminder of the universal right to health and the ongoing need for equitable access to healthcare systems that are resilient, inclusive, and responsive.

In an era shaped by both unprecedented medical advancement and complex global health threats, this day encourages reflection on the progress made, the disparities that persist, and the shared responsibility of governments, institutions, and individuals in advancing public health.

It was first celebrated in 2019, following a UN resolution recognising the role of education in fostering sustainable development, peace, and prosperity worldwide. The day aims to promote inclusive and equitable quality education for all, emphasising its pivotal role in achieving the Sustainable Development.

It serves as a reminder of the need to ensure every individual has access to education regardless of their background, gender, or socioeconomic status, ultimately contributing to a more just and equitable world.

When I look at Mental health education specifically I believe it is essential for fostering awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting emotional well-being across communities. It equips individuals with the knowledge and tools to recognise, understand, and manage mental health challenges, both for themselves and others.

By incorporating mental health education into schools, workplaces, and communities, it encourages early intervention, reduces the risk of mental health issues escalating, and empowers people to seek help when needed. It also promotes empathy, resilience, and healthy coping strategies, contributing to a more supportive and inclusive society.

Ultimately, education around mental health is key to improving overall quality of life and building a healthier, more informed population.

When evaluating the change process I have found that it involves a number of important formative stages. These include creating awareness & urgency, developing a desire for change, enabling change, driving & sustaining action, and reinforcement with evaluation.

1) Creating awareness and urgency is the first step in the change process. It involves educating & informing key stakeholders on why change is important, needed and the potential consequences of not implementing it. To effectively create holistic awareness and urgency, change managers must coherently and effectively communicate the benefits of the change & provide data to support the need for change.

2) Secondly, creating a sense of urgency is only the first step in driving change. In the, what use is urgency without action? To develop a true desire for change, you must focus on solutions that will make a lasting difference. This means showing employees with clear benefits & outcomes they can relate to and onboard.

3) People need the right skills to successfully develop change. Without the knowledge or ability to change, they won’t be able to move in a positive direction. Therefore, stage three in the change management process is to provide employees with the resources, training, guidance, and support they need in order to be successful.

4) Stage four is creating a sense of desire in employees is crucial so as to motivate them to achieve outcomes of a change initiative. However, to achieve sustained progress, it is necessary for change managers to proactively involve employees in the change process.

5) Finally while change initiatives may get off to a good start, it’s important to remember that change is not complete until it has become a permanent fixture within a business or corporation. Ongoing reinforcement ensures the program becomes part of the company’s culture. Lasting and sustained changed should always be at the core of this model.

Evidence shows that around 60% of bereaved parents surveyed felt they needed specialist psychological support for their mental health, but were not able to access it on the NHS.

Even when parents did meet the inclusion criteria, and waited months to access support, they then found there was no-one in their local area with the specialist skills and knowledge needed to provide it. And those bereaved parents who were able to get psychological support, often had to attend clinics where they were surrounded by families with live babies.

The Baby Loss Awareness Week Alliance is now urging Government and the NHS to ensure that anyone who needs specialist psychological support following pregnancy loss or the death of a baby can access it, free on the NHS, wherever and whenever they need it.

There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to be feeling after these experiences. You may be struggling with a post-traumatic stress response, or you may feel stuck in the grief.

Throughout the week, bereaved parents, and their families and friends, unite with others across the world to commemorate the lives of babies who died during pregnancy, at or soon after birth and in infancy.

Keep life simple. Sometimes the basics can drive us to leaps and bounds. That's why the GROW model exists.

🧚‍♂️ Building my business I constantly feel the pressure. I want to make it all work. Managing the time available while keeping my sanity is the real challenge. It can be psychologically and emotionally draining. But in all truth, I would have given up a long time ago if I didn’t follow a model like GROW to stay balanced.

🥅 G is for Goals. I must have clarity on what I want. Not what others think I should do, but what I actually value. I constantly reflect that I am not pursuing someone else’s vision of success.

🌍 R is for Reality. There are times where my ambition directly clashes with my reality. So I have to reassess my goals consistently. It’s an ongoing process, adjusting so I don't position myself up for setbacks.

✔ O is for Options. Believe it or not, there’s always more than one way to get where you want to go in life. Always explore different paths—some feel like shortcuts, others longer routes, but I know I can take my time and still move forward.

⏩ W is for Way forward. This is vital because breaking it down into digestible, bite-sized steps is imperative. When I stopped trying to overreach and just focused on walking steadily, things actually started to get done.

The truth is, creating something of value, while juggling life is hard, but GROW allowed me keep things honest and consistent.

Black History Month is an important chance to celebrate and honour the experiences of Black African and Caribbean communities and their diaspora.

This month also acts as a catalyst in addressing systemic racism and inequality in different aspects of society, including education, employment, and access to mental health support.

Black History is all our shared history and is an integral part of the UK’s history and culture. Although October acts as a dedicated month, it is incumbent on society to continue to lift the voices and experiences of Black communities all year round.

If you experience racism as a Black person, it can leave you feeling unsafe, unwelcome, and like you don’t have a fair chance of succeeding.

The accounts we hear and see about ourselves, and our communities play a significant role in shaping our identities, self-esteem, and sense of belonging. When Black individuals and communities are misrepresented or excluded, it can contribute to feelings of invisibility, marginalisation, and psychological distress.

By reclaiming different narratives, we can tackle racism, highlight historical trauma and support minority voices in mental health advocacy. This is vital to promoting culturally relevant care and challenging biases within the system.

In 2020, it was found that 63% of UK adults agree that when other people are kind it has a positive impact on their mental health, and the same proportion agree that being kind to others has a positive impact on their mental health.

Kindness is defined by doing something towards yourself and others, motivated by genuine desire to make a positive difference. The trichotomy of control is a trichotomy that effects everyone in life, perhaps more so now than in time of the stoics. Our lives are more fast paced now & with this comes stress but most of it is not needed, if you are able to correctly establish what is truly in your control and what is not.

Illustrated in the picture, anything that comes from you, your attitude, behaviours, actions & reactions are in your control. The stoics put the individual at the master of their own universe. You cant however control what is going on around around you, trying to do so causes unhealthy negative beliefs in your life.

However if you act in accordance with nature and the universal laws that govern all of us you are in a better position to face challenges from the outside that may come in to your sphere of influence which include things you have partial control over or no control at all. This is what made Marcus Aurelius such a good emperor, he had his mind and body in unison and thus he was able to deal with any problems reasonably and fairly.

Look to see what is in your control in your own life, create your own circle of control in your journal, with an outward circle of what is not in your control, a middle circle of partial control and and an inner circle of complete control. Remind yourself of it when challenges come into your sphere of influence, in doing so you will be more in control and stress free in life.
